People Lister is an easy-to-use addressbook that helps you remember everything about the people you know: phone numbers, birthdays, email addresses, or anything else. It automatically reminds you when someone has a birthday coming up, so you’ll never forget a birthday again! People Lister also makes it easy to send email to anyone.
If you have trouble remembering birthdays and phone numbers, then People Lister can help you out!
Registering
People Lister is shareware. It is not free! You may use it for a couple of weeks, but then you must register to continue using it. To register all I ask is that you send something in exchange: money, music, a postcard, beer, or anything else reasonable. I don’t think this is too much to ask considering even most shareware asks for a set amount of money.
The unregistered version of People Lister has some limitations.
- Documents are limited to 25 people each.
- The File Catalogue can only hold 2 documents.
- Password protection of documents is not available.
The registered version removes these restrictions allowing 8000 people per document, 20 documents in the File Catalogue, and the ability to create password protected files.

Getting New Versions
New versions of People Lister will first be sent to registered users. After that, they will be available at the following locations:

Requirements
People Lister’s requirements are simple: all you need is the following:
• A computer running MacOS 7.0 or later.
• A 68020 or better processor (including, of course, any PowerPC)
(This simply means that People Lister will not work on the original 68000
machines, including the Mac Classic and PowerBook 100).
• Internet Config 1.1 or better (if you want to use People Lister’s e-mail sending
Using People Lister is very straight forward, but some of the more common functions are described below.
• Adding someone to a document…
To add a person to a document simply choose “Add…” from the “Person” menu. You will be presented with a dialogue in which to enter information about the person. The amount of information that can be entered for a person is limited: ‘comments’ and ‘address’ are limited to 255 characters, while all other information, such as names, phone numbers, and email addresses, is limited to 27 characters. Anything past the limit is ignored.
• Customising phone number names…
When creating a new person, you can customise the name of the phone numbers for that person. The default phone number names are “Home”, “Work”, and “Other” but can be changed to anything else, for example “Pager” or “Cellular”. To change a phone number name, just click on the little purple arrows in the add dialogue; the text will become editable, and you can alter it as you wish.
Note that even if you customise the phone number names, it is always the first number (by default “Home”) that is shown in a document window.
• Changing information about someone already in a document…
To change information for a person already in a document, select the person and choose “Edit…” from the “Person” menu. (Alternatively, you can hold down the option key and double-click the person in the document.) You will then be presented with the same dialogue you used to add the person, except the dialogue will be filled with the person’s current information. Change anything you want and then click the “Edit” button to put the changes into effect. The same restrictions apply.
• Getting more information about a person in a document…
To see a window containing all a person’s information, select the person and choose “Get Info” from the “Person” menu. (Alternatively, you can double-click on the person, or select the person and press return.) This window will show all the information that was entered about the person, namely: first name; middle name; last name; birthday; age; astrological sign; all the phone numbers; e-mail address; address; and comments.
• Printing information about a person in a document…
People Lister does not yet support printing an entire document. However, you may print information about a specific person by creating an information window (described above) and then choosing “Print…” from the “File” menu. The information you see in the window will be printed in a box in the middle of the page.
• Checking documents for people who have birthdays approaching…
People Lister allows you to search documents for people who have birthdays approaching. To check for upcoming birthdays, choose “Check Birthdays…” from the “Tools” menu. A dialogue will appear asking if you would like to search the current document, all open documents, or the documents in your File Catalogue (see the next section on how to add documents to File Catalogue). After making your selection, a list of people who have birthdays approaching is created and displayed in a window.
In the event someone has a birthday on February 29 (a leap year), People Lister considers the person’s birthday to be March 1 if there is no February 29 in the current year.
• Adding documents to the File Catalogue…
People Lister allows you to keep a list of documents that it will use to search for upcoming birthdays-- this is the File Catalogue. You may have several documents and want to search all these documents for people with birthdays approaching. Perhaps you have one document for family members, and one for business associates, stored in several places on your hard drive.
To add a document to the list choose “File Catalogue…” from the “Tools” menu. You will be given a dialogue with a list (perhaps empty) and three buttons. Click the “Add…” button and choose a file to add to the list. The file you choose will now be part of your list of files.
If a document is already opened in People Lister, you can easily add it to the File Catalogue by choosing “Add Document to File Catalogue…” from the “Tools” menu.
When using “Boot Checker” (which checks for birthdays every time your computer starts up) or the control strip module “Check Birthdays”, People Lister only checks documents in the File Catalogue for people with birthdays coming up.
• Sending someone e-mail…
People Lister allows you to send someone in a document e-mail. All you need to do is select the person you want to send mail to, and choose “Send Mail” from the “Person” menu. Of course, you have to have entered an e-mail address for the person in question. If the person’s e-mail address is not entered, just edit the person and add it in.
Sending mail is made possible thanks to Internet Config, a wonderful piece of software by Peter N Lewis and Quinn “The Eskimo”. Without it, People Lister will not be able send mail. You can get this programme at:

Limitations
The unregistered version of People Lister is limited to 25 people per document, and the File Catalogue is limited to 2 documents. Upgrading to the registered version eliminates these restrictions, allowing 8000 people per document, and 20 files in the File Catalogue.
The birthdays People Lister accepts are also limited. All birthdays must be between January 1, 1904 and February 6, 2040. This limitation exists in both the registered and unregistered versions. However, this probably will not be a problem for most people.
Legal Stuff & Distribution
Although People Lister has been tested on many computers, it is by no means guaranteed to work. No warranty of any kind, expressed or implied, is made. Use it at your own risk.
Although People Lister is shareware, it is still copyrighted software. That means that you cannot change it and distribute it, nor can you take credit for its creation.
People Lister may not be sold for profit or included with other software, products, publications, or services which are sold for profit without the explicit permission of the author (Sean McBride). For permission to include it in software collections which are distributed on CD-ROM, or other media, for whatever purpose, please contact the author.
The registered version of People Lister, may not, under any circumstance, be distributed by anyone other than the author.
